NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - A Public Service Announcement
From the City of Bend Fire Department & Deschutes Co. Fire District #2

CONTACT: Gary Marshall, Fire Marshal, City of Bend Fire Marshal, 322-6308

Human carelessness may be our greatest threat!

The City of Bend and Deschutes County Rural Fire District #2 increased their fire danger awareness level to EXTREME today. It is predicted that the land within this 250 square mile fire district boundary will remain at Extreme Fire Danger until late September.

Bend Fire Department is asking residents and visitors to be extra careful with fire. Devasting wildfires that threaten our community often start by human carelessness. The following is some advice from the Fire Marshal’s Office to reduce the amount of fires this summer:

• Outdoor burning of debris and garbage is prohibited and will result in a citation.
• Campfires should be small and completely extinguished before leaving. A 5-gallon bucket of water and a shovel is required at all campfires.
• Refrain from using fireworks during the dry summer months. Fireworks are prohibited within the Forest.
• Hot barbeque briquettes and ashes should be emptied into a bucket of water.
• Parents should place lighters and matches in a secure area away from young children. Children that start fires will be issued a citation and the Childs parents may be responsible for the damage that results from the fire.
• A 5-pound fire extinguisher and a firewatch shall be available during all outdoor welding operations.
• Smoking should not be done in dry grass or around combustible vegetation. It is illegal to throw lighted materials from a vehicle. Always discard butts in a safe manner or in approved receptacles.
