NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Tom Fay, Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District #2 (541) 318-0459 Bend, OR-Work has begun on the second of three new fire stations being constructed by Deschutes County Rural Fire District Q. The stations are part of a 6.1 million-dollar project that will build the three new stations and renovate two existing ones. The undertaking is a result of agreements reached between the rural fire district and the city of Bend earlier this year. Concrete foundations were poured this week at the west site near the intersection of Simpson Ave. and Columbia Street. Preparation work has also begun on the new fire administration building being constructed by the city of Bend at the same location. The new south station on Country Club Drive has entered the framing stage and should be ready for occupancy by next summer. The existing south station, located next door, will be in operation until the new one is completed. A third new station will be built near the Mountain View Mail on Highway 20. Work on that station is slated to begin in the next 30 days. Also located at that site will be a tower used to assist in the training of fire personnel. The training tower will be the only one of its kind in eastern Oregon. Construction of all three stations as well as the training tower was awarded to Kirby Naglehout Construction Company after they submitted the low bid for the project. In the first part of the master plan, the Tumalo fire station was expanded by adding a third bay. Interior work was completed by P & P Construction, and the remodeled station is fully operational with enhanced capabilities. Some exterior work remains to be done. Tom Fay, administrative manager for the fire district, noted that all of the new stations should be completed by the fall of 2000. At that time a decision will be made on how best to use available resources to improve the station at Neff and Hamby roads.
